The plateau of Leucate

The Leucate plateau is located in Occitanie region, on the coast of the Aude department, between the ponds of La Palme and Salses-Leucate.
This natural area, which is part of the Narbonnaise Regional Park, is an exceptionally rich site from a naturalistic point of view. It is the only limestone cliffs on the Languedoc coast, and as such attracts many walkers who take advantage of the breathtaking view of the sea.

Situation map

This limestone plateau, dotted with vines, pine woods and low scrubland is also a favorable ground for many species of orchids. The mild climate and its amount of sunlight favor early species that can be observed as early as January or February.

Himantoglossum robertianum is the first orchid species to bloom on the plateau

At this time, the almond trees in bloom offer a taste of spring.

In February, yellow or mauve irises also appear.

The natural landscapes that can be seen today on the Leucate plateau are inherited from its former agricultural vocation. The plateau was grazed by sheep as evidenced by the many remains of low walls, enclosures and other dry stone huts. It is traversed by many paths which form a maze in which one could get lost if it were not for the lighthouse and the Albères to serve as a landmark.
